Goethe-Institut Finland: Training Programme for Emerging BIPOC Illustrators and Authors in Children’s Literature (Online)

Illustration of a couple of BIPOC young people against a colourful yellow-pink background. They are wearing or balancing big letters spelling the word DRIN.

Goethe-Institut Finland is organising a Europe-wide, free, intensive online course for (emerging) BIPOC illustrators and authors in children’s literature. The workshop is open to BIPOC in Europe with experiences of racism and an interest in writing for children.

Children’s books are becoming more and more diverse, reflecting the reality of a diverse society. Still, authors and illustrators of colour, with experiences of racism, migration and/or flight, are strongly underrepresented in the children’s book market. Thus, this workshop aims at educating and empowering BIPOC that are interested in or are already writing or illustrating stories for children.

The online course runs in various dates between 2 September – 7 November 2022 and consists of:

  • Two modules: one for authors and another one for illustrators.
  • A focus on craft, developing your own style, insights in the publishing industry as well as creative routines to start and finish projects.
  • Experts in kid lit who will share their lessons and help participants to create impactful narratives and illustrations.
  • Networking and exchanging with fellow participants to further enrich your artistic practice and help you reflect on your values and visions.
  • Hands-on experiences in the publishing process while working on a short story collaboratively in writer-illustrator-teams.
